You are my wild | week 1

February 26th, 2013

I am your parent; you are my child. I am your quiet place; you are my wild.
I am your calm face; you are my giggle. I am your wait; you are my wiggle.
I am your carriage ride; you are my king.
I am your push; you are my swing.
I am your audience; you are my clown. I am your London Bridge; you are my falling down.
I am your carrot sticks; you are my licorice. I am your dandelion; you are my first wish.
I am your water wings; you are my deep. I am your open arms; you are my running leap.
I am your way home; you are my new path.
I am your dry towel; you are my wet bath.
I am your dinner; you are my chocolate cake. I am your bedtime; you are my wide awake.
I am your finish line; you are my race. I am your praying hands; you are my saying grace.
I am your favorite book; you are my new lines. I am your night-light; you are my starshine.
I am your lullaby; you are my peekaboo.
I am your good-night kiss; you are my I love you.

A bunch of really talented photographers are doing a little project called You are my Wild. A portrait of their children, each week for one year. My ‘real’ camera has slowly been collecting a film of dust, and I need a boost to become friends with it again. I’ve decided to join the party, albeit a few weeks late. Better late than never, right? I will post the photos here each week. I am so looking forward to looking through these at the end of this year, and to seeing my children each week through the big lens again.

A few little ones

October 8th, 2012

Tap, tap. Is this thing on?
It’s been a while my friends. The blog has been quiet, but lots and lots of pictures taken. Lots of pictures, just waiting in the back of my brain to be blogged. This summer I took the pressure off of myself to do anything I didn’t really feel like doing. Blogging was one of those things. As much as I enjoy it, I needed a break.
A few weeks ago I started a new job teaching preschool! So, that leaves me with even less time to do other things. I love it so far, it feels good to have a new challenge. I have realized that it is just a part of who I am to seek out new things, to learn and to try and to feel scared and afraid but to continue to grow. I have decided not to take on any photography clients through the end of the year, just to be able to devote my attention to things that need it more right now.
But… I was feeling restless this morning and I recognized the urge to be creative. I focused for a while on giving the blog a fresh look, and putting together a few photos from some client sessions over the past few months. I have lots of personal photos to share too, and I will soon. But for now, some beautiful little ones I had the pleasure of spending time with recently.

Colorado

May 24th, 2012

We just spent a week taking in the beauty that is Colorado, and visiting my brother Evan. He graduated from his Master’s program in Golden, it was awesome to see him in his cap and gown {again!}, we are all so proud of him. We explored the area as much as we could with the little ones in tow, and I have to say, traveling with them being a bit older felt SO much easier than the last time. They really loved the mountains, the trees, the squirrels, eating at restaurants nearly every meal, and of course being with Uncle Evan. We tried to soak in all that we could, and see as much of the area as our time would allow. It really is such beautiful country, the mountains are breathtaking and just as majestic as I had imagined they would be. We also fell in love with the city of Denver, the parks and old neighborhoods, the people and the culture. We can’t wait to go back! Until we meet again…

A garden update & red lentil soup!

May 1st, 2012

The novelty of a garden is not lost on us here at the Root house. We all marvel at just how big and green and fruitfull our garden is becoming. The kids get so excited when they can pull a carrot, or when a strawberry is finally ripe. Sam exclaimed upon eating the first one, “It tastes like… a strawberry!!” Yes, amazing, isn’t it? ;)

We are cutting the last of the kale and swiss chard now, though it is hanging on well with our daily 90 degree temps. The corn is getting tall, the zucchini and eggplant are spreading, and the tomatoes! Oh my gosh, the tomatoes. We may have gone a little overboard this year… we planted 4 or 5 different types, and 9 plants total. There are Early Girls, Sweet 100′s, Yellow Pears, and Romas, and they are already being picked as they show the slightest shade of red (by one enthusiastic 5 year old gardener…)

I also wanted to share this soup recipe I made the other night. It is definitely a keeper, easy and SO delicious. One of those recipes that will be in regular rotation around here! I found the recipe here, a lovely blog with lots of good gluten-free recipes & resources too.

Red Lentil Coconut Curry Soup
■3 Tbsp Coconut Oil
■1 Medium Onion, Chopped
■4 Carrots, Chopped
■1 head cauliflower, chopped
■3 cloves garlic, minced
■1-inch ginger, minced
■3 c red lentils
■1 tsp cumin
■1 tsp garlic powder
■1 tsp paprika
■1 tsp turmeric
■1-quart homemade chicken broth
■Up to 1 can full fat coconut milk
■salt to taste
■1/3 c cilantro, chopped

Add coconut oil to large soup pot. On medium high heat, sauté onion, garlic, carrots and cauliflower until onions are translucent. Add lentils, broth, and spices. Bring to a boil then turn heat down to simmer until lentils are fully cooked (the soup will be yellow and have a thick, creamy texture). Add coconut milk to desired consistency. Garnish with plain whole milk yogurt or coconut cream and cilantro if you like.

Flowers and butterflies

April 10th, 2012

My in-laws were here last week, and we packed so many fun things into that time. One of our day trips was to the Botanical gardens, and this is the perfect time of year to see things blooming there. There were so many beautiful wildflowers, the kids loved smelling them all (and even picking a few :) They also have the butterfly exhibit right now, which is always fun. Lots of pretty butterflies in a small space, they landed on our shirts and hats. Julia and Emilia read their butterfly guides and wanted to know all of the different species’ names. Julia was thrilled to see there was one named “Julia”! We told Mimi there was one names after her too. ;)
It was a dreamy day all around.

Our friends Lissette and Eric welcomed this adorable little girl in February. She looks so much like her big brother when he was a baby! They make the sweetest family of four. Congrats Bell Family! xoxo

A month in photos

March 19th, 2012

Oh my, hello there. I’m not feeling all the bloggy lately, can you tell? ;) There are just so many more fun things to do these days than sit down at ye old computer, but alas, here I am… Mostly because I miss having the record. I just {finally!} ordered a book of my old blog, from the week after the girls were born until they were about 18 months old. I am so happy to have that journal of our lives to reflect on, and to show the kids. So, I want it to go on, even if it is less frequent. And the reasons are good, it is less frequent because when they were babies we were home more, I had more time to sit and write. Now we are just doing so much, we are out and busy and having lots of fun. We’ve been enjoying the beautiful spring weather in our backyard {with a new tire swing!} and in the garden, we had a nice snowy weekend in Flagstaff, Sam started little league. All the kids had spring break, though not at the same time. It gave Sam and I a chance to have some fun together when the girls were in school, we went on a nice hike and had some lunch dates. And the girls enjoyed their time while Sam was at school, mostly playing with all of his off-limits toys! ;) They are so sweet together lately, and especially when Sam is at school are the best of friends. Here is a little bit of this last month in photographs…
